Before Christopher Bastin joined Gant in 2005, he spent time at Acne, Whyred, H&M, and the Swedish denim brand Solo. In 2010 he relaunched Gant Rugger as its design director, instilling the collection with a sixties-pop take on American sportswear. Today, Bastin is the creative director of all GANT brands.

Here, he offers up his top 10 rules of style, including two items to splurge on, the one color that looks good on every man, and his take on trendy dressing.

1. Guys should always have the following in their closet: well-made shoes, simple slim-fitting jeans, a selection of high-quality button-down shirts, and a tailored club blazer.

2. Timeless style looks good on everyone. Trends look good on Kanye West . . . for about four minutes.

3. I like the whole accessory thing that's happening right now in menswear. But wearing too many bracelets reminds me of Pitti Uomo from two years ago, so go easy.

4. The first things you should splurge on, when ready, are a good pair of shoes and a vintage watch. Everyone will look at your feet, and the ones who know the game will look at your wrist.

5. Don't invite people over for burgers and beers and welcome them in a tuxedo. If you're having good friends over and you're just hanging out, it's okay to stay comfy and relaxed. However, if your entertaining skills are more on the upscale side, dress accordingly.

6. As long as it's all vintage, by all means go for denim on denim. If wearing new, go for denim jeans and a worn-out chambray shirt. That combo always works.

7. You can never go wrong with navy blue. It looks good on everyone.

8. If you're a pasty-looking fellow, stay away from reds and oranges. Otherwise, wear more color than you would normally go for. You'll look more successful and self-confident.

9. The one accessory you can wear all the time, year round, and to any occasion is a quality vintage timepiece. My favorites are Rolex—either a 1967 Sub or 1960 GMT.

10. A great shirt must fit well, be made from quality fabric, and have real mother-of-pearl buttons. And above all, the collar needs to have that perfect roll. Guys who own Gant shirts know what I'm talking about.
