The lug sole is leaving the mountainside and hitting city sidewalks. Designers are using it to transform already sharp shoes and boots into all-terrain hybrids.

If your favorite shoe lacks a lug, it's not too late. "Clever customers update their shoes with a thick rubber sole," says David Mesquita of New York City's go-to cobbler, Leather Spa. "Guys are asking for this more and more recently." Adding Vibram lug soles costs $80 to $120. They come in various colors, but stick with classic black or brown.
