Over a round of drinks a few years back, Michael Williams (the creator of A Continuous Lean and co-founder of PR firm Paul + Williams), and Randy Goldberg (editorial director of Urban Daddy) discussed the possibility of opening a store in New York City. But instead of setting up shop with a permanent location, they've created a retail outlet open only one weekend a year.
Now in its fourth year, the Pop Up Flea retail experience places seasoned brands like L.L Bean and Gitman Brothers next to emerging labels like Robert Frost's unisex collection of WWII-inspired jewelry—with a smattering of vintage finds. Check out the images below for a preview of some of the pieces exclusive to the Flea, including, for example, a 1972 Rolex Submariner from Hodinkee. Aside from creating a trove of one-of-a-kind items and vintage finds, Goldberg and Williams have established an environment where people can interact with the faces behind their favorite labels. "They see the stories and the people behind the brands," says Goldberg. "It's as much about the people there as it is about the product."
The Pop Up Flea takes place this weekend, beginning Friday, Nov. 30, at 3 p.m. With more than 40 participating vendors and an exhibition of Danny Lyon's photo-documentary, "The BikeRiders," presented by Levi's Vintage Clothing, you no longer have an excuse to put off your holiday shopping, and you might even get it all done in one weekend.
