This Summer's 10 Biggest Movie Bromances

Not just for frat boys anymore, the classic male-bonding role has taken on new forms. Meet this season's genre-bending cast of characters.

Obi Wan and Luke, Kirk and Spock, Harold and Kumar, Wayne and Garth, Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid. The list of classic bromances goes on and on—and this summer may be the bromanciest ever. In fact, we spotted a dozen films capitalizing on the (potentially cheesy) male-bonding movie format. Each exemplifies a different kind of mano-a-mano relationship: classic frat-boy bromance, dynamic-duo bromance, whoa-this-is-actually-a romance bromance . . . you get the idea. We've organized the list below chronologically by release date because, yeah, we love ya, man.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Actors: Andrew Garfield and Dane DeHaan

Genre: Dueling-Nerds Bromance

Release Date: May 2, 2014

The Scoop: What happens when you pit two brains with yearnings for theatrical costumes and aerial acrobatics together onscreen? Such is the tale of the Green Goblin and Spider-Man, who reunite after a childhood friendship (unmasked of course) only to become bitter enemies (boys will be boys)—brawling over a girl, the lovely Gwen Stacy, and the fate of New York.

Actors: Zac Efron and Dave Franco

Genre: Frat-Boy Bromance

Release Date: May 9, 2014

The Scoop: Frat-house mates Teddy (Efron) & Pete (Franco) rain down pranks on their unsuspecting suburban neighbors after an "anonymous" noise complaint that becomes an all-or-nothing hijinks (think: classic toilet-papering and decor rearrangement). The troublesome two might be the most adorable set of frat-bros out there, finishing each other's sentences, boozing together, having the most inappropriate heart-to-hearts and concocting the biggest bong you've ever seen. How bro-tastic, you say? They've even got a secret handshake.

X-Men: Days of Future Past

Actors: James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender / Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen

Genre: Lifelong Bromance

Release Date: May 23, 2014

The Scoop: The fate of the X-Men and the mutant race is threatened. Only a time-jumping Wolverine can bring on-and-off-again enemies Magneto and Xavier to work together in the past to prevent the mutant annihilation in the future. But this bromance is a twofer since the movie features Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy as the younger Magneto/Xavier and Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart as the older set. Once a bro, always a bro.

The Scoop: In this Western comedy flick, Theron becomes MacFarlane's sensei, teaching him courage, gunslinging (OK, and hair-flipping). And though she's one of the guys, it's a timeless example of a romance hidden inside a bromance.

22 Jump Street

Actors: Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill

Genre: Undercover Bromance

Release Date: June 13, 2014

The Scoop: Officers Schmidt (Hill) and Jenko (Tatum) return to the big screen as undercover officers in this sequel playing college students infiltrating a drug operation by way of beer pong, wet T-shirt contests, and a T-Pain-filled soundtrack. Hill is the emotional nagger, while Tatum lives up to blonde jock expectations.

Genre: Inter-Species Bromance

Release Date: August 1, 2014

The Scoop: A gun-wielding raccoon (Cooper) and an earth-shattering walking tree ("Groot," played by Diesel) join the team of space bandits attempting to save the fate of the galaxy in Marvel's latest. Cooper has said, "Rocket is . . . a sort of Joe Pesci in Goodfellas guy."

Let's Be Cops

Actors: Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans

Genre: Buddy Cop Bromance

Release Date: August 13, 2014

The Scoop: Another law-enforcement comedy vying for box-office glory, these costumed clowns tackle what it's like to impersonate the 5-0 for a day (and night)—and it's not the party they expected (especially when real-world mobsters enter the picture). If nothing else, it's a good illustration of why you shouldn't dress as a cop for Halloween.

The Scoop: Based on the best-selling book of the same name, The Giver chronicles the journey of "The Receiver of Memory," a kid named Jonas (Thwaites) who's given all knowledge predating the utopian world he now lives in by the former Receiver (Bridges). Kinda like Yoda and Luke, minus all the backwards lingo.

Actors: Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Antonio Banderas, Wesley Snipes, Mel Gibson, Harrison Ford, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and others

Release Date: August 15, 2014

The Scoop: One of the most testosterone-fueled franchises of the summer box office, this film is packed with more explosions than a Michael Bay film and a cast that redefines "godfathers of the action genre." Put another way: Frat bros got a hold of serious weaponry and ditch the Abercrombie tees for all-black duds.
