One prevalent trend for spring/summer '12 is ombré dyed and printed fabrics—a technique that gives a graduated tone, with colors that shade into one another.

One prevalent spring/summer trend this year is ombré dyed and printed fabrics—a technique that gives a graduated tone, with colors that shade into one another.

The best example we saw on the runway was at the 3.1 Phillip Lim presentation in Paris. Lim was heavily inspired by skater counterculture in '70s California, a nod to his youth spent growing up in Huntington Beach. He smartly mixed these pieces with sartorial elements that gave the collection an effortless and youthful vibe throughout.

I love the versatility of these ombré pieces. They look equally cool whether dressed up with more tailored items, or downplayed with basics like jeans or a tee shirt. Scroll down for more photos.
