This is not a 30 Rock joke. This is real.

If you were looking for a news story that combined all the action at Pitti Uomo with the high drama of the World Cup, look no further: Alessandro del Piero, a footballer who until recently played for Sydney FC, is now the face of wool.

Yes, wool. The Woolmark Company, which represents Australia's nearly 30,000 wool producers, announced yesterday at Pitti that del Piero to be the face of its next campaign, which will highlight the versatility of Merino wool. Photographer Oliviero Toscani will shoot the ads next month, and they'll be released in the fall.

And like other athletes-turned-models before him, del Piero can wear the mess out of a suit. Whether he can sing the fictional Wool Council's theme song as well as Jane Krakowski, however, is another story.
