Ask Korean fashion designer Woo Youngmi if women make better men's clothes than guys can and her answer will be an emphatic yes.
"Definitely. Certainly. One hundred percent," she said enthusiastically when we posed that question to her (through a translator) last week. We also chatted about her brand WOOYOUNGMI's capsule collection for Mr Porter, which will be available on Tuesday. But more on that in a second.
"One of the limitations or challenges for a designer is himself or herself," continued Madame Woo, as she's called. "As a male designer's body changes over time, his work will become more reluctant. But a woman who designs for men keeps a sort of male ideal in her mind, so her work can keep going forward."
Youngmi's work isn't futuristic, but it's always extremely considered. The eight pieces she designed for Mr Porter—which take style cues from her color-blocked spring 2014 collection—include a lightweight, unlined navy-blue blazer that she says is perfect for summer and a pair of green-and-white trainers. Her favorite piece, though, is the cotton T-shirt with a hem that features thick blue, green, and cactus-print stripes.
Madame Woo went in this very sporty direction for reasons that go beyond style—she sympathizes with men who have to get dressed up in the summer. "It's a really difficult time for you because it's so hot," she said.
