One hem doesn't work on every pair of pants. If you tell a tailor to make your jeans the same length as your pleated trousers, you could wind up looking like Pee-wee Herman. Follow these guidelines for hem adjustments, and regardless of what you're having shortened, be sure to bring the appropriate shoes and let your pants sit where they're comfortable—tailors tend to hike all trousers up to the waist, even if you like to wear them on your hips.
The Cuff
Pleated pants looks best with a cuff because it balances out the billowy fabric at the waist. The cuff should be an inch and a half wide, and the length and the break the same as with a straight hem.
