How to Find the Right Men's Watch

Everything you need to know to find the right wristwatch for any occasion.

DAY: Consider this watch as the Everyman accessory—a timepiece all guys should own. Its characteristics—masculine design, functionality, and versatility—render it as suitable with jeans as it is with a flannel suit.

The Band: Stainless steel provides the greatest stylistic range. Less obvious options include versions in matte, textured leather and dark-colored canvas.
The Size: A watch you wear during the day can display a little bulk but shouldn’t overpower your wrist—40 to 44 millimeters in width is a safe range.
The Functions: Strike a balance between functions that you may actually need (date and chronograph) and elective ones, like tourbillon, that just look impressive.

From left: Breil ($925), Bulgari ($6,900), Seiko ($250), Panerai ($25,600)
