Where to Shop, Drink, and Stay in Nashville

January 2010 Issue
Honky-tonks, Stetsons, and the Grand Ole Opry still define Nashville. But while no one was looking, much of Music City shed its rhinestones. Onetime backwater neighborhoods like East Nashville and 12 South teem with stylish restaurants, forward-looking boutiques, and lively bars where young pickers bang out bluegrass. Cultural heavyweights like Jack White and Nicole Kidman now call the Tennessee capital home, and it's easy to see why—the town delivers southern hospitality with a healthy side of coastal sophistication.

Billy Reid
Alabama designer Billy Reid has earned northeastern cred with his Manhattan outpost, but there's something more authentic about getting your plantation-chic clothing below the Mason-Dixon. Reid's Hill Center store looks like a parlor fit for Robert Penn Warren, though its inventory—buffalo-leather wing tips, four-pocket seersucker blazers, vivid plaid oxfords—invokes Robert Downey Jr. 4015 Hillsboro Pike, Suite 104, 615-292-2111; billyreid.com
