Honky-tonks, Stetsons, and the Grand Ole Opry still define Nashville. But while no one was looking, much of Music City shed its rhinestones. Onetime backwater neighborhoods like East Nashville and 12 South teem with stylish restaurants, forward-looking boutiques, and lively bars where young pickers bang out bluegrass. Cultural heavyweights like Jack White and Nicole Kidman now call the Tennessee capital home, and it's easy to see why—the town delivers southern hospitality with a healthy side of coastal sophistication.
Hutton Hotel
Just west of downtown you'll find the Hutton Hotel, one of the country's greenest properties. Converted from a 1960s office building, it combines sustainable design elements—renewable bamboo floors and energy-efficient bronze exterior glass—with modern southern accents, like reimagined Windsor chairs and ceiling beams. One of the many eco-perks: a hybrid courtesy car. Don't be surprised if you see Al Gore at the Hutton's zinc-topped bar (really). 1808 West End Ave., 615-340-9333; huttonhotel.com
