It's Time to Ditch the Black Tuxedo

Nine tips for retiring the stodgy evening suit.

December 2009 Issue

The Gray Suit
'Tis the season to abandon the tired evening standard for something singular, like this gray cashmere tuxedo by Brunello Cucinelli. The Italian designer created the atypical formalwear, complete with cashmere bow tie, for one person—himself. He had no intention of actually producing it until he wore it to opening night at La Scala last December—and a bunch of Milanese men began asking him where they could get it. The only caveat? "When you wear it, you really have to own it," Cucinelli says. "For me, the gray tux isn't an alternative, it's my tux."
