Before we get to face shapes, Salt's creative director, David Rose, offers a pre-buy checklist:
• CONTEXT
"Do you need frames to wear with a suit and tie every day, or are
they going to be worn mostly when you're running on the beach?" asks Rose.
If the answer is the latter, stick with aviators and wrap styles. If it's
the former, classic square shapes in colors like tortoiseshell and black
work best.
• PRICE
While it might be easy to justify buying cheaper sunglasses, Rose
advises against it. Quality frames, with silicon nose pads and polarized
lenses, last longer, fit better and protect against harmful elements.
• COLORING
Hair and skin tone are just as important as face shape. Blondes
and Redheads should stick with tortoiseshell since black is often too harsh.
Salt's Rose also suggests gold or silver. If you have brown or black hair,
go for rich colors like black or dark brown tortoiseshell.
• SHAPE
Okay, here comes the part where a lot of guys go wrong. "People often make the mistake of choosing a frame that is just trendy," says Rose. "But an oversized wrap might not work if you have smaller features." Our fit guide is a great starting point, and remember, when in doubt, ask for help. A premium eyewear boutique with a well trained staff can guide you in your quest.
