These complex, robust, and, yes, masculine creations belong in every man's home.

April 2011 Issue

THE EXPERT
Frederick Bouchardy, owner of the Brooklyn-based fragrance company Joya, explains how to buy and burn a candle.

Check the Ingredients
"Soy wax has a particular smell. Paraffin wax is too strong. I prefer a combination of soy, vegetable oil, and beeswax."

Keep It Trimmed
"You should cut your wick to about a quarter-inch before lighting—otherwise the flame will get too big and burn unevenly."

Know When Your Candle Is Done
"When the wax gets down to about a half-inch, stop lighting the wick. It seems wasteful, but you don't want to burn to the bottom of the glass."
