THE HAT CAN MAKE THE MAN (JUST ASK JOHNNY DEPP)
"I started wearing hats two or three years ago. One of my mom's best friends, a lawyer, gave me my first hat, a brown velvet one. A hat can give you a bit more charisma. If I see someone with a hat I like, I say, 'Excuse me, where did you get that?' Of course, Johnny Depp wears great hats. It's not just the way he wears them, but the kind of hat he wears—a Borsalino. I have been influenced by Johnny, who I've known since I was 12, in a lot of ways. He's been like a brother to me."
HONOR THY FATHER
"When I was born, my father was already 57, but even then he had a unique style: light jeans, light-blue shirt, white Repettos. My father created and popularized this style. I actually wore that outfit once in a photo shoot, as a tribute."
HOW SCARLETT JOHANSSON BECAME GAINSGOURG'S DUET PARTNER
"My father sang 'Bonnie and Clyde' with Brigitte Bardot—who was at the time one of the sexiest women in the world—and I got to do the same with Scarlett. I had listened to her 2009 album with Pete Yorn, Break Up, and I liked her style, this really sexy timbre. A friend was like, 'You should do "Bonnie and Clyde" with her, because she looks like Bardot.' Then I found out that Break Up was inspired by my father and Bardot's time together. So I told her about the project. She suggested we meet in an Italian restaurant in the East Village, but it was closed when I got there. I thought, 'Is this a joke? Is she not coming?' But she did, and we wound up eating pizza and talking like two normal people. The next step: We were in the studio."
WHEN YOU FIND SOMETHING YOU LOVE, BUY TWO
"Of course I love Burberry. They have a really nice jean that fits me. It's a nightmare finding jeans. Maybe it's just laziness because I don't want to waste too much time shopping for jeans. I find them, I take two. But I was trying on some clothes for the Burberry show and I found a nice jean that I really like, deep blue. Now I wear them all the time."
WEAR WHAT MAKES YOU MOST COMFORTABLE ON STAGE
"Every show is the same thing. Not especially elegant. I wanted to wear whatever I felt. And when you perform, it is easy to have a black shirt and dark jeans. It's always a good fit everywhere. I never wear a jacket on stage. Even when it's crazy cold outside, I save the jacket for later. I always wear these shoes from the J.M. Weston x Maison Kitsuné collaboration when I perform. They're cream-colored and made of really nice, soft leather. And my hat."
FROM ONE LEGEND'S SON TO ANOTHER . . .
"I love the way that Sean Lennon dresses. Every time I see him, he always looks elegant—and different. Last year, at the Chanel show, he was wearing a sixties suit with a little vest, green and red with little squares, and a derby hat. He looked like a perfect English gentleman."
THE PLAYLIST: As his new compilation suggests, Lulu is a big fan of his dad's oeuvre, and his tastes generally tend toward the classic. "I like old-school music from the sixties, seventies, eighties—sometimes the nineties," he says. Here are some of his favorite nonfamily tracks.
