How to Pick the Perfect Pair of Jeans

Designer and denim expert Loren Cronk explains selvage, vintage, grains, washes, stitching, and more.

Though you might not know his name just yet, one Brooklyn man is helping lead a denim revolution. In a sea of overpriced pants and cheap imitations, former Levi's and Ralph Lauren alumnus Loren Cronk is bringing craftsmanship and fine tailoring back to denim design—along with a legion of happy customers. Located in a small white storefront in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, Loren is more atelier than retail destination. The shop features practical yet exquisitely constructed jeans made on site by a team of dedicated (and heavily tattooed) artisans. With a range of carefully selected selvage, repurposed, and rare-washed goods—and a side business repairing treasured threads—there's nothing Cronk doesn't know about jeans and denim fit. We stopped by the shop to learn more about how to spot quality craftsmanship, finding the right style, and what goes into a great pair of jeans.
