LOOK FOR UNEXPECTED GROWTH OPPORTUNITIES
American Gigolo marked the beginning of my relationship with cinema. It was a style choice by the director, and those clothes became the film's costars. No one could have predicted that it would have been so successful. My favorite scene is the one where Richard Gere opens a drawer and you see the Armani shirts clearly displayed.

GO AHEAD AND TAKE A VACATION
I am a practical man, and I'm not frightened by work or difficulties—I never dream of running away. Of course, there are times when I have to regenerate, and this is when I dream of going on holidays to the seaside.

ON ALWAYS BEING HUNGRY
I would say in 1982, when I was 47 and I appeared on the cover of Time, this is when I realized that I had become famous. However, I must say that I didn't feel in any way that I had "made it." On the contrary, I felt that this acknowledgment was somewhat premature and that I still had a long way to go.

HOW TO STAY MOTIVATED (EVEN AFTER NEARLY FIVE DECADES)
I am lucky that I do something I like that gives me a lot of satisfaction and always brings me into contact with interesting people. Passion for your work is the greatest motivation of all.

WHAT YOU WEAR IS YOUR BUSINESS CARD
I think that trying too hard is never sophisticated. I sometimes see men who force themselves into suits that are too tight or too loose to keep up with current trends. My uniform is considered to be a navy-blue T-shirt. It's practical for someone like me who works a lot, and it conveys a clean and dynamic image. It's minimalist and elegant, and it represents me perfectly.

WHY RETIREMENT ISN'T A BAD WORD
I can assure you that everything is set up and that my team will take over at the right time. In recent years, I have surrounded myself with capable people who I have trained and developed with an eye to the future.

IT'S GOOD TO WANT THINGS
I have always wanted to own the original print of The Great Wave by Katsushika Hokusai. It represents my two passions, Japanese prints, which have often been the inspiration for my collections, and the sea.

AND IN FASHION, AS IN ANY OTHER FIELD . . .
You need to be yourself and be consistent. There is nothing worse than playing a part that you don't identify with.
