In theory, a kick-ass tree house—the kind you dreamed of when you were a kid—requires a sturdy, leafy, wide-limbed roost. But when Laura Donnelley asked Christopher Kempel, 38, of Rockefeller Partners Architects in Los Angeles, to create one in the backyard of her Mandeville Canyon home, a walk around the property revealed that there was no place to put it. "There weren't any ideal trees," he says.
