So Kempel skipped straight to Plan B: He perched the house 12 feet above the ground on five slanted steel columns, which pierce the structure at different angles—cradling it as a tree would—from floor to roof. "They're metaphorical tree trunks," Kempel says. "There are no branches on the columns, and we didn't paste bark on them, but that's how we feel comfortable calling it a tree house."
"The front entrance mimics a rope ladder with its levitating staircase. The all-wood interior supports the illusion—everything you see is walnut, mahogany or Pau Lope."
