There are two things you're likely to spot at the annual Tokyo Designers Week: cutting-edge creations in the fields of industrial, product, and furniture design, and Matthew Waldman. The founder of the forward-thinking American accessories label Nooka, Waldman spends much of his time traveling the world, but he always returns to the Japanese metropolis come fall. It helps that Nooka has a small office in Tokyo and that Waldman spent his twenties there, working as a designer at a local firm by day and as a club bouncer by night. Now Tokyo Designers Week, along with concurrent shows DesignTide Tokyo and Design Touch, lure him back year after year. "I find Tokyo so inspiring, as both a designer and a consumer," he says. Here Waldman describes his top discoveries.
