Inspired by human anatomy, the Cleveland firm Objeti used ball-socket joints at both ends of its three-foot aluminum-and-LED Twiggy lamp; the technique gives it a 360-degree range of motion.

Designed with Charlotte Perriand for his La Maison Tropicale prefab house, Jean Prouvé's 1950 Potence lamp for Vitra extends nearly seven feet, delivering big impact without sacrificing floor space.
