4 Variations on the Classic Eames Lounge Chair

Since 1956, the Eames Lounge has been revered for its marriage of comfort and style. A new generation of innovative imitators prove it's as timely as ever.

THE ORIGINAL

Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman by Charles and Ray Eames for Herman Miller

This truly iconic design had a utilitarian origin: It was made in 1956 for Hollywood legend Billy Wilder, who would rig his own makeshift recliners to nap in on-set. With a sleek bentwood shell, perfectly angled at 15 degrees to alleviate pressure on the lower spine, and a luxurious black leather interior meant to evoke the feel of a well-worn baseball mitt, it showed that something comfortable could also be chic. The chair, one of the most recognizable pieces in MoMA's permanent collection, has remained in continuous production since its debut and commands a pretty penny at secondhand design shops—if you're lucky enough to find one.
