Holiday Gift Guide 2012: Audio Equipment

Once upon a time, there was one way to listen to music: live. These days we're expecting our audio to be wireless, portable, customizable—and sound even better than the original recording. Below, solutions that are analog, digital, and somewhere in between.

For Mullet-Free MacGyvers
Rock-It 3.0

This strangely fascinating audio accessory turns any object into a speaker, be it a lamp shade, a beer can, or your dog. Tiny and plastic, it nonetheless boasts technology we will never begin to understand but has something to do with vibration sequences. Basically, you plug the gizmo into any device with a standard 3.5mm headphone jack, affix the Rock-It to another object (large, hollow items work best) and feel the noise. The more Rock-Its and objects you daisy-chain together, the better the sound quality will be, and the more in touch with your household items you will become.
