As mainstream eco-vehicles struggle for footing, carmakers hope that sexed-up luxury versions will fare better. And beneath the ELR's sci-fi shell and Caddy comfort lies a cure for the common gas-wasting commute—the same plug-in hybrid system that powers the Chevrolet Volt. On sale later this year, the newcomer promises around 90 mpge and about 40 miles without using a drop of gas.
