11 Luxury Destinations with an Eco-Conscience
An Earth Day ode to upscale resorts that practice sustainability in noble and novel ways.
Santa Monica, California
Santa Monica's newest and sleekest hotel features an opulent glass-encased lobby, a dramatic U-shaped main building, and an impressive use of recycled materials (reclaimed metals, concrete, stucco, terrazzo, wood, and carpet from torn-down hotels). Hell, the fitness-center floor was made from refurbished tires. Sustainable practices include low-flow water systems, the country's first Auto Demand Response System (which automatically lowers energy usage at the hotel when necessary to avoid blackouts), and bath vanities and guestroom chairs made from FSC-Certified (Forest Stewardship Council) wood.
